Vancouver, an Outdoor Idyll

If you love the outdoors and communing with nature, head for Vancouver! In 2018 Vancouver was voted 6th best city in the world to live in. School director Kevin Keeler explains what make Vancouver so special!

“Vancouver is many things to many people, but for me it is home. Situated on the Pacific Ocean and surrounded by the Coastal Mountains, locals and visitors alike are enthralled on a daily basis by the natural beauty that surrounds us. Blessed with a mild climate, we locals cheekily delight in sending pictures to family members in other parts of the country showing ourselves playing golf or cutting our lawns in the middle of winter.

After living here for over 30 years, I still never get tired of riding my bike around the Stanley Park Sea Wall, hiking up the Grouse Grind on the North Shore, or strolling the quaint streets of nearby Steveston.

I moved here soon after the World Exposition in 1986 and the transformation of the city was already underway, with former industrialized lands being transformed into beautiful parklands. More recently the Winter Olympics in 2010 showed a new generation of the world what Vancouver has to offer. Vancouver has increasingly become a place people come to settle down in, whether from other parts of Canada or from abroad. Strolling along Robson Street shows me the incredible diversity of this city.

As anyone who has spent significant time here can attest, we do get our share of rain, especially in the winter, but that’s what keeps the place beautiful and green, and unlike snow, you don’t have to shovel it off the sidewalk!

A trip to Vancouver would not be complete without sampling some of the natural beauty on the Sea to Sky Highway to Whistler. Whether you enjoy skiing, snowboarding, or just a delicious cup of hot chocolate in a chalet, you should do yourself a favor and take a Sunday drive up into the mountains. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.”
