LSI Boston Talent Show & Potluck Lunch

LSI Boston hosted its first ever talent show, and it was a great success! Students and teachers sang, danced, played instruments, rapped, did gymnastics, and showed off their sports and martial arts skills (including a push-up contest between some male students and female martial arts—trained teacher Melanie, resulting in a tie after 60 push-ups). Everybody had a great time, learned new things about their fellow students and teachers, and we are definitely planning to do it again next year!

As an English Language school we are committed to providing our international students with the necessary skills to learn English and about American culture. At the same time we also have a unique opportunity of being surrounded by the different cultures and languages of our students. With students from 22 different countries represented at LSI Boston in August, we decided to embrace the diversity of our school by having an International Potluck lunch. Students either made or bought traditional food—main dishes, desserts, drinks, and appetizers—that represented their culture. From Turkish Delight to French Tarte Tatin to Brazilian Coxinhas to Korean Kimchi Pancakes, our palates were pleased! The lunch also sparked dialogue among the students to share information about their cultures.

In conjunction with the food, our Saudi students provided entertainment to celebrate the end of Ramadan by performing a traditional folk dance. After they performed, they taught other students and LSI staff how to perform the dance!

Due to the overwhelming popularity and success of the potluck lunch, and countless requests from students to do it again soon, we plan to have similar parties four times per year. Next up: Halloween!
