Changes to Study Permits
In January, the Government of Canada announced an intake cap on international student permit applications in an effort to stabilize the number of international students in Canada. The intake cap will last two years and is expected to result in a significant decrease in approved study permits. There are some exceptions to the new cap. Current study permit holders will not be affected and the cap will not impact study permit renewals.
The cap only affects study permits. There will be no cap on short-term language students coming to Canada on TRVs or eTAs, or students on work permits.
Students wishing to travel to Canada to learn English are encouraged to apply for a visitor visa.
