In the US, we celebrate Memorial Day on the fourth Monday of May to honour the memory of soldiers lost or wounded in war. For many Americans the Memorial Day Weekend also marks the unofficial start of summer. The celebrations entail a weekend of parades, pool parties, and Bar-B-Q’s. At LSI Berkeley, we thought we’d celebrate the occasion with a Bar-B-Q of our own.
It’s rare we manage to organise an activity which galvanises the whole school but our Bar-B-Q turned out to be a resounding success with all our students. As with most things at LSI, the event was a great mix of cultures. Whilst our student services coordinator, Ava, took charge of grilling all -American favourites such as hot dogs and hamburgers, there were also contributions from across the globe including some tasty Libyan steaks, and a Quebecois delicacy -Poutine, a heart-stopping combination of French fries, gravy, and melted cheese. Few things say summer more than Frisbee, warm sun, and fresh food on a grill. We’re happy to report that summer here in Berkeley is off to a great start!
