LSI Toronto Celebrates World Student Day

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2015

June 12 was World Student Day in Canada. This annual event, organised by Languages Canada, was held in cities all across the country. LSI Toronto students joined students from other Toronto language schools at the University of Toronto for a day of games, talent shows, and food.

We had an enthusiastic group of 11 LSI student volunteers and staff who helped at the LSI booth and the ice cream stand. At the LSI booth, students could enter the Word Game for a chance to win prizes. Each of the volunteers received a volunteer certificate from Languages Canada. Well done everyone!

World Student Day at LSI Vancouver

Monday, June 22nd, 2015

LSI Vancouver took part in the 2015 World Student Day held Friday June 12, 2015 at Robson Centre. This event brought together many ESL schools and allowed their students a chance to meet and share their experiences in a fun filled day. All the students who attended were given a ticket for a free slice of pizza and drink. Students mingled with fellow students and stopped at different activity tables being run by the participating schools. A live band played on a stage and many students took the floor to show off their dance moves.

Schools tried to attract and entertain students to their tables, in many creative ways. Free pictures in provided costumes and ping pong matches. A Canadian classic, shooting plastic hockey pucks at a goalie in net as well as a giant Jenga set of blocks that once built, challenged students to see how many pieces they could remove before it collapsed.

This year at the LSI table students took turns launching ping pong balls into plastic cups. Each student was given 3 chances to shoot a ball into a group of plastic cups. All the students that stopped by to try their luck were given a little prize for taking part and all the successful students won a LSI backpack if one of their 3 shots landed in a cup.

The event started at noon and lasted until 5 pm. As you can see from the pictures everyone enjoyed the day and left with some more fond memories of Vancouver.

LSI Berkeley Celebrates Memorial Day with an American Bar-B-Q

Wednesday, June 10th, 2015

In the US, we celebrate Memorial Day on the fourth Monday of  May to honour the memory of soldiers lost or wounded in war. For many Americans the Memorial Day Weekend also  marks the unofficial start of  summer. The celebrations entail a weekend of parades, pool parties, and Bar-B-Q’s. At LSI Berkeley, we thought we’d celebrate the occasion with a Bar-B-Q of our own.

It’s rare we manage to organise an activity which galvanises the whole school but our Bar-B-Q turned out to be a resounding success with all our students.  As with most things at LSI, the event was a great mix of cultures.  Whilst our student services coordinator, Ava, took charge of grilling all -American favourites such as hot dogs and hamburgers, there were also contributions from across the globe including some tasty Libyan steaks, and  a Quebecois delicacy -Poutine, a heart-stopping combination of French fries, gravy, and melted cheese.  Few things say summer more than Frisbee, warm sun, and fresh food on a grill.  We’re happy to report that summer here in Berkeley is off to a great start!
